Deciding what you want to do with your life is never easy. We can see this with the amount of people who go through their entire lives without ever really working out what they want to do. However, young people are expected to make these big life decisions at a very young age, to decide what they want to study in preparation for their chosen career. Many people feel that they have to make a decision far too young, but when really is the best time to make one of the most important decisions of your entire life?
Some people think they know from when they are a very young age what they want to be, and most of them change their minds. Otherwise, the world would be jam-packed with footballers and veterinarians. However, that’s not to say that if at 14, 18, or 21 you still want the same career as you wanted when you were 5 that your choice is wrong. The best thing to do is to make academic choices bases around three things: what you’re good at, what you enjoy, and what it going to be generally useful in an employment context. When you get into the world of work in any capacity, things will become clearer.

Ultimately, it’s not likely you’ll ever be able to sit down one day and force yourself to choose, because if you do, it will just be something you’ve decided ‘will do’ just because you absolutely had to pick. In all likelihood, it will either suddenly hit you one day, or build up gradually over a period of time, and be a gut feeling or emotion as opposed to a logical thought process. The logical thought process is what follows the decision, when you’re working out how you’re going to get to where you want to go. Don’t put pressure on yourself, and if you never get that feeling of enlightenment, so what? Some people never do and they turn out ok. Just try out some different things, and if you’re not happy, try something new. You won’t be stuck there forever if you don’t like it, so just sit back and enjoy the ride.
